The Department of History of Art is a friendly and dynamic department dedicated to providing a supportive atmosphere needed to develop the individual accomplishments of our students. We have an international reputation, with faculty who are active researchers, regularly publishing books, exhibition catalogues and articles with leading presses and in international journals. We have a tradition of student-oriented faculty who are devoted to teaching and the pursuit of a broad spectrum of art historical knowledge.
A wide range of courses in the Department of Art History allow the student to examine histories of art from various perspectives. Period studies are combined with more issues-oriented explorations, thus ensuring exposure to the full richness of ideas and approaches current within the discipline. Our programs emphasize the cross-fertilization of theory and practice with a curriculum that critically addresses the discipline of art history and its relation to developments in such fields as First Nations, feminism, and gender studies, postcolonial theory, museology, and socio-political analysis. Because of the flexibility of the curriculum, students can structure their own programs and explore the multidisciplinary aspects of art history for future graduate study and for future careers in a variety of fields including museums, galleries and libraries, conservation, education, journalism and research.
