Art History is interdisciplinary

Art History encompasses a study of sexuality, race and gender, business and economics, politics, culture and society. It depends on a vast array of theories and methods. What makes our department exciting and fairly unique is that professors’ research and the courses they offer explore a genuinely wide scope of topics and allow students to benefit from a broad understanding of what constitutes art in both historical and contemporary contexts.

TARTU 2024: Curating a Capital of Culture in Estonia

Dr. Rebecca Duclos is organizing a Summer Field School in Tartu, Estonia from June 15th to July 2nd 2024. Headquartered at the dynamic Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn, study firsthand how this Baltic nation has weathered occupations by Germans, Danes, Swedes, Poles, Russians and, most recently, the Soviet Union from the 12th to the late 20th centuries. “Survival” for this population has indeed become an “art” over the years, evidencing itself within particular literary, visual, performative, and culinary forms that continue to endure and evolve. This course is open to undergraduate and graduate students.
