Hannah, Embroiders
Etching and watercolour, 24 x 18 inches
Hannah wanting children.
Promising her child to God. Her poetry and prayers. Then a son is born. Promising to give
him into God's service when he is weaned. Taking years to wean him. Not wanting to
separate. Nursing till he was older. How many years? Staying close to him. Sewing
vestments, embroidering Torah covers for the Temple. Fulfilling the promise, in their own
independent way. |

Sarah, with Child
Etching and watercolour, 18 x 24 inches
Sarah, wife of a shepherd.
No children. Lots of wealth. Servants. What would she have been doing? Perhaps tapestries?
Weaving stories. Her own story. The story of her pregnancy. The promise of generations, as
many as the stars in the sky and grains of sand on the shore. The promise to Abraham in
words, but Sarah and Hagar fulfil it. Sarah's pregnancy a mystery. A struggle of bearing
weight at their advance age. A blessing and a burden. Abraham received a promise, and
Sarah receives the fruit. |

The Potato Man (detail)
Etching, 10 x 8 inches
|
My father the potato man is
dead.
There is no one to tell me
I've used the wrong potato
to bake
all crumbly
that should have been boiledor boiled
all soggy
that should have been fried
My father the potato man
will not sit over borscht
and sour cream
and potato
pieces
and tell me
'later I will tell you
of the cow and the farm
and my mother and Russia
and the cold. Later I will
tell you.'
My father the potato man
has no 'later' left. |

Ladders (detail)
Etching, 18 x 9 inches
|
I tried to draw
A Jacob's ladderbut Madonnas
climbed the stairs
I started shaping
Hebrew letters
but flowers
grew instead
and in the centre
of the petals
that only last
one hour
a Buddha came
to meditate
and stayed there
quite content

Prague
Etching, 6 x 4 inches
|
Was I not present in that space
when they talked the 'legends of the Jews'
by the tomb of Rabbi Low
with the Golem monster
buried there beneath the clayWas I not present in
the Old New Synagogue
when they spoke the 'customs of the Jews'
how they read the Torah
with a pointed tool
not touching parchment with their hands
Was I not present in that exhibition
when they told the 'history of the Jewish Race'
in French, Italian, German
as if they had succeeded
and there were no Jews
I floated like a ghost,
listening, not able to explain:
we have made children
with each new child
these legends, customs, histories are multiplied
with each new child
these words on parchment live
with each new child
a million voices sing.
