Luba Genush's Europa, a blockprint and collage work that suggests the
chaos and reordering of Europe after World War II, was shown at the
Biennial Exhibition of Canadian Art in 1961. From this starting point,
her art works, mainly prints and mixed media collage, have come to explore the relationship between art, people, and the world of technology. When Henry Lehmann interviewed her for the Montréal Gazette in 1992, he noted "the artist, who says she 'loves computers,' relates to technology the way one might be attracted to a beautiful but lethal serpent." Genush juxtaposes images of the body with images of modern machinery and computer-generated graphics, plotting what she feels is the love-hate tie between humanity and technology. Her preoccupation with technology extends back to the 1960s, when she was described in the Montréal Gazette as an artist who had been spending a lot of time in scrap yards, looking for the intriguing pieces of metal that would form parts of her latest sculptural work (Donna Flint, 1966). In 1983, she created the mural, The World of Neurology for the Montréal Neurological Institute. In 1992 Genush travelled to Moscow for an exhibition called Montréal-Moscou, which also featured two other female Montréal artists having Soviet connections, Marina Popova and Natasha Wrangel. All three women were originally from the former Soviet Union, representing three different generations of those who had left it behind. Genush considers her ties to Kiev, where she experienced the influence of Byzantine and Russian icons, to be strong, indicating "this influence, as an undercurrent, remained with me throughout my career as an artist" (1998). Writing for the exhibition catalogue, Genush revealed: "I am interested in exploring a feeling for the past, which I try to bring into the present by mixing figures of previous cultures with the imagery of my present-day sensibility. In the formal aspect, I try to combine the abstract with realism" (1992). A powerful example is her 1991 Techno-Woman, a work nine by six feet, which features six nude women lined up as though on an assembly line, facing front, their stomachs printed over with images of geometry and machinery, as if replacing their internal organs with robotics. The work is a beautiful yet frightening depiction of the melding of humanity with machine as we confront the technology we have created. Genush is a member of the Societé des artistes professionnels du Québec, the Canadian Society of Graphic Arts, the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and the Association des graveurs du Québec.
