Multi-media artist, Peter Krausz incorporates painting, drawing, text, photography, engraving and fresco into his installations. Referring to landscape, Krausz's installations bear the inscriptions of personal and collective histories. His landscapes or sitescapes have been called "memory-sites," historically charged locations, often where mass violence has been perpetrated. In Champ Paisible (1986), Krausz represents a head in a field which recedes drawing our eyes to an architectural structure reminiscent of a concentration camp. Two pieces of wood point to a passage in the wall perhaps alluding to the camp’s entryway. In Kolyma II (1987), Krausz depicts the mining camp in eastern Siberia, where political prisoners were once sent to perform forced labour and none escaped death. Night Train (1990), a series of fourteen landscape panels painted in oil on copper was based on his recollections of his flight from Romania in 1969 and of his escape over the Czech-Austrian border. De Natura (Humana) (1992) is an installation combining frescos, photographs and lead plates, each plate inscribed with a place name and date and assembled as a kind of wall of memory for different historic markers of Jewish persecution. The installation contrasts beautiful and vibrant landscape imagery with stark references to human frailty and destruction. The 1996 Landscape and Memory series is a group of secco and fresco paintings showing lush landscapes rich in colour, generally deep orange and greens. "Colour here is a conduit to time. The colours embrace us and catch us up in the temporality of the landscape, itself an elegy to a remembered past and a still uncertain future" (James D. Campbell, 1997). Krausz's interpretation of such sites is meant to engage the viewer in an act of remembrance of atrocities which have marked the twentieth century, but he does not elicit direct representations of these violent atrocities. His landscapes and portraits reflect how the passage of time has turned historical sites of violence and mass extermination into bucolic views of countryside, concealing all traces of inhumanity and aggression. Commenting on the Landscape and Memory series, Krausz recalled a visit to Chinon in the Loire Valley where "there is a little island near the town which is beautiful. It wasn’t until I read the last line in the Guide Michelin that I learned it had once been the site of a massacre of 160 Jews in 1321. The victims were burned at the stake for allegedly poisoning the town's wells. But the site was so beautiful. It made me wonder how anything so terrible could've happened there" (1998). Through his work Krausz raises the viewer's awareness of how the passage of time erodes and masks past acts of brutality. Viewing his seemingly innocuous landscapes becomes part of a commemorative practice, infusing these sites with historicity and revealing how such sites are inextricably tied to the events that have occurred there. "Krausz's paintings are remarkable in that body, place, psyche (and the memories that reside there) are so dynamically interwoven within them. Where it is just a site that is depicted . . . the site functions as a dynamic archetype for any place in which human beings have inflicted pain on each other" (James D. Campbell, 1989). From 1980 to 1991, Krausz was curator of the Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts in Montréal. In 1991, he began teaching Fine Arts at the Université de Montréal.
