Printmaker David Silverberg has been concerned with a
variety of subjects, in particular nature, erotica, scenes from the many countries he
visited and Jewish themes, as in his illustrations for The Song of Songs and The
Psalms of David (1967). In an interview with Nancy Bauer in 1980, the artist describes
how Judaism generally affects his art, for as a Jewish man he is constantly preoccupied
with the commandment, "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image." He
enjoys the resistance of metal in the engraving process perhaps because it reflects the
tension between the artist and this ancient belief. In his prints, realism is countered by
incredible fantasy, and an often complicated overlapping of imagery lends depth and forces
the eye to linger as it tries to identify everything within the frame. His works
"demonstrate the artists eclectic interests and his alert, precise, often whimsical
sensibility. Narrative images, they are created by a story-teller who aims to tell his
tale with skill, joy, and intelligence" (James Burnett, 1988). Silverberg studied art
as a boy under Arthur Lismer at the Art Association of Montréal and went to Paris to
study printmaking with William Hayter in 1957. As well as printmaking, Silverberg has
worked in batik, ceramics, and photography, and designed the sets for the DancEast
production of The Nutcracker. In 1984 he was elected a member of the Royal
Canadian Academy, and in 1986 was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, London,
England. He has travelled in almost eighty countries, spending time in China, where he was
invited by the government in 1991 and 1992 to travel, teach, and exhibit. Throughout his
long career Silverberg has taught printmaking at Mount Allison University in Sackville,
New Brunswick (1963 to 1995), leaving in 1995 to become an artist-in-residence at Acadia
University, Wolfville, Nova Scotia.
