A Master's degree in art history, or the equivalent, is the minimal requirement for admission to the program. Each application is studied by the Interuniversity Program Committee, which evaluates it on the basis of the following elements/criteria: a previously obtained Master's degree (MA or the equivalent in art history or in a relevant and related field); the quality of the academic record; knowledge of French and English; three letters of recommendation; experience and publication record; and the calibre of the thesis proposal accompanied by a letter from the intended supervisor. Candidates must also have obtained in their master's program a GPA equal to, or better than, 3 out of 4.30 (or the equivalent in other grading systems).
Application deadlines:
- April 1 for the Fall term
- November 1 for the Winter term
It is recommended that the program be started in the Fall term.
Applicants should apply online.

Language requirements
Since this is a bilingual program, applicants must demonstrate a level of competence that would allow them to read and to follow lectures and discussions in both English and French. The ability to speak and write with facility in both languages is not required; students may participate in discussion, and may write reports, examinations and theses in English or French, as they choose.
