Textile artist Gordana Olujic Dosic in the early part of
her career wove large structural tapestries. It was during her residency in the textile
studio of the Harbourfront Centre, from 1989 to 1992 that her tapestries gradually
diminished in size and she began experimenting with surface designs such as screen
printing, stitching and appliqué. At Harbourfront, Olujic Dosic produced a series of
small tapestries, such as Fragments of My Memories: Granny was a Young Girl (1989),
inspired by ethnic Serbian textiles, woven and embroidered. With this tapestry, Olujic
Dosic refers to the tradition where young Serbian girls produced various forms of textiles
which would make up their dowry. Dosic is also alluding to this rite of passage as it was
experienced by her own grandmother. During this particular phase of her production, she
integrated Cyrillic script, and the image of a Mesolithic stone sculpture from an
important archaeological site on the shore of the Danube (Lepenski Vir), into her
silkscreen designs. As she says: "Recently I have been exploring the dichotomy of
constructive and destructive forces, both in human history and in nature. In this context,
human endeavor is perceived as optimistic and heroic, as well as humorous, and human
artifacts as both fragile and monumental, ephemeral and timeless" (1999). As a member
of the Toronto fibre arts community, Olujic Dosic has participated in projects organized
by the Harbourfront Craft Studios and the Museum for Textiles, and has taught for Toronto
Board of Education. In 1992, Olujic Dosic was commissioned by the York Quay Centre to
produce twelve banners depicting winter scenes. The "universality of human experience
and the interconnectedness of space and time" she says are the concerns that guide
her creative expression. Henry Wright has agreed "her work shows specific
ethnocultural heritage, and yet at the same time remains relevant to a wide and varied
audience. Without sacrificing aspects of her heritage, she manages to strike a universal
chord" (1992).
